President’s Message

November 28, 2018

I’d like to begin with an update on the provincial government’s Bill 148, as some of you may be aware. Your Chamber’s efforts have paid off as through Bill 47, the government has repealed many parts of the original Bill, one that could have had a significant impact on business and in particular, the small business sector.

Bill 47 will result in a reduction of the current 10 day personal days, it cancels the two, paid emergency leave days, and it will hold the minimum wage at $14.00 per hour until 2020. The Cornwall Chamber, the Ontario Chamber and chambers province-wide have lobbied the government to review the Bill and its negative impact on business and in particular, the small business sector.

This is an outstanding example of what your Chamber can accomplish with when it is supported by its members.

A brief note about Bridges 2018. This past October, over 80 local business professionals took part in a series of topical workshops that focused on issues that can impact them. An important part of the day included a luncheon with a special keynote speaker.

Rick Tachuk, Chair of the American Chamber of Commerce in Canada and an authority on cross border trade provided delegates with a keen insight into issues and opportunities for our unique region of three distinct nations.

Following Tachuk’s remarks, Beatrice Johnson-Tarbell from Akwesasne presented a telling portrait of how to effectively understand First Nations culture for cross border business success. I spoke to a number of delegates and I am pleased to report they had nothing but positive comments bout the event. Bridges will be on the Chamber agenda, once again in 2019 and I can assure you it will be a must-attend event, once again
