President’s Message

December 7, 2017

Hello everyone. With the Christmas season fast approaching and the gift shopping that goes with it, I’d like to showcase the be.local our annual “shop-at-home” campaign. Our local businesses employ local people, pay local taxes and contribute to the success of our community. The best way for the people of Cornwall to say thanks is to support our local merchants by shopping in their stores.

Our merchants know the community, they know their customers, and they go out of their way to provide the best possible service and will search out wanted products for you. When you think about it, why would you waste time and gas to go somewhere else when you have the best in your own back yard?

Here’s a thought for you. The Chamber has be.local  “T” shirts available for sale at the Chamber offices on Second Street. Why not surprise your staff by giving them a be.local “T” shirt they can wear to show that they support the customers who shop at their establishment.

Our community recently welcomed a group of officials from the Republic of Korea including its ambassador, His Excellency Mr. Maeng-ho Shin. Its embassy had approached the City to inquire about a cultural and economic development exchange as part of its outreach program. Embassy officials met with the Mayor and the Chamber and as a result, a South Korean delegation visited the City on December 1.

The Chamber joined with the Mayor and officials from the Republic during their visit, one that was warmly received by South Korean officials. We’re hoping the Ambassador, now that he has had a chance to visit us, will view our City as a potential centre for economic development opportunities.

Business Excellence Awards. While most of you know it is the Chamber’s most distinguished affair, what you may not know is 2018 will mark a special year for the Awards. Next February 24, the Chamber will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the event, one that recognizes outstanding achievements by businesses and individuals from across our community.

Planning is already underway for the Awards Banquet and Executive Manager Strasser and Awards Chair and Chamber Director, Lynn Chauvin advise me that guests will be in for a very special evening.

The Chamber’s popular, and final PubNite for 2017 will be held on December 12 and the Jet Set Pub at the NAV Centre will be our host. Last year, the Jet Set team put on a dazzling array of hors d’oeuvres and no doubt we’ll enjoy more of the same on the 12th. PubNites are a great “business-after-hours”  networking affairs and I hope to see many of you there.

As a final note, the Chamber, its Board of Directors and entire team would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year of growth for all.
