February 2, 2018
Hello everyone. As we move ahead in 2018, and speaking for our Chamber team, I hope you can all look forward to a positive year of growth.
I am especially pleased to announce this year’s most renowned event. On Saturday, February 24, the Chamber will present its annual Business Excellence Awards and Citizen of the Year Banquet. This year will be a particularly special one as the Chamber will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Business Excellence.
Along with the prestigious Citizen of the Year, the Awards Banquet recognizes and acknowledges excellence in our community, whether it be an individual or, one of our many businesses and industries.
It will be an amazing evening with a wonderful gourmet meal, and tickets are still available. I encourage you to come and enjoy the evening — you’ll be glad you did. Contact Lyette at the Chamber office to reserve your tickets.
On a more serious note, the Chamber and its provincial counterpart, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC), are clearly aware of the significant impact that recent increases to the minimum wage and expansion of labour and employment standards are having on all businesses.
The OCC has provided our Chamber with an open letter to Premier Wynne. We sent that letter to all of our member businesses and encouraged you to reach out to Premier Wynne with your concerns.
The Cornwall and OCC Chambers both agree. The implementation was too much too fast. It is clear that the Government of Ontario must take further action to mitigate the unintended consequences of Bill 148. In co-operation with the OCC, we will continue to call on government to provide offsets in the upcoming budget that will help employers manage this drastic increase in labour costs. We must ensure that we are doing all we can so that Ontario remains competitive.
Now to a lighter note. PubNites are back for 2018! We’re finalizing the schedule and our first PubNite was held at Eight Zero Zero with host and owner, Dave Petrynka. It was a great evening and a large crowd was on hand to enjoy some delicious hors d’oeuvres and effective networking. As for the PubNite schedule for the rest of the year, watch for an announcement on the Chamber’s web site and Facebook page.
As a final note, exhibitor packages are being sent out for the 2018 Spring Home & Leisure Show. This is the premier, consumer focused event that brings more than 4,000 potential buyers from all across the region. Take advantage of a huge captive audience to showcase your products and services.
